Australian Association for Exercise and Sports Science
Australia has one of the highest
rates of diabetes in the world.
Every 8 minutes, an Australian is admitted
to hospital with an osteoporotic fracture.
Research suggests by 2050, over
7 million Australians will suffer from some form
of arthritis.
MEDICAL HEALTH can be IMPROVED
with the help of an Exercise Physiologist.
Regular moderate physical activity is crucial for public health. Many medical conditions lead to a decreased quality of life for middle-aged and older Australians. Common medical conditions such as diabetes, arthritis and osteoporosis can decrease the average Australian’s ability to perform daily tasks such as grocery shopping, playing with grandchildren, or enjoying social activities such as lawn bowls.
The Australian Association for Exercise and Sports Science (AAESS) is a professional organisation which is committed to establishing, promoting and defending the career paths of tertiary trained Exercise Physiologists and sports science practitioners, who are in turn committed to best practice and client well-being. The central tenet of our profession is that:
"Exercise and Sports Science is a multidisciplinary field concerned with the understanding and enhancement of human movement in the broadest sense, including general physical activity pursuits such as goal oriented fitness regimens and recreational sport as well as elite sport and the area of performance enhancement. It includes the knowledge, methods and applications of subdisciplines (ie. exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor control and motor development, exercise and sport psychology) as well as how they interact".
AAESS was officially founded in 1991 to meet the professional needs of exercise and sports scientists in Australia. It is directed by an Executive Board comprised of leading academics and practitioners in these fields and is supported by a growing number of regional chapters throughout Australia.
Exercise Physiologists are 4-year university qualified allied health professionals who specialise in the delivery of exercise, lifestyle and behavioural modification programs for the prevention and management of chronic diseases and injuries. EPs provide physical activity and behaviour change support for clients with conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, depressions, cancer, arthritis, COPD and many moreThe Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and the Royal Australian College of Physicians have both endorsed the important role of Exercise Physiologists in the treatment of chronic diseases and conditions. Exercise Physiologists are now the fifth most utilised allied health professionals in Australia (Medicare Australia, 2007). Eligible Australians, referred from their GP under the Medicare Enhanced Primary Care Scheme, can receive Medicare rebates when they consult an Accredited Exercise Physiologist. Department of Veterans Affairs patients, referred from their GP, can be bulk-billed when consulting an Accredited Exercise Physiologist.
The Australian Association of Exercise and Sport Science (AAESS) represents over 1800 qualified exercise and sports science practitioners concerned with the understanding and enhancement of human movement, including goal oriented fitness regimens and recreational sport, as well as elite sport and the area of performance enhancement. Members are qualified with knowledge, methods and applications of subdisciplines: exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor control and motor development, exercise and sport psychology.
