About the Edith Cowan University Health and Wellness Institute

Our Mission

To optimise collaborative health research, and enhance synergies between different research disciplines, industries and government bodies, with the aim of strengthening knowledge and understanding of how to improve health and well-being across the lifespan, and within differing social, cultural, political and environmental contexts.

Background

It is now widely recognised that the prevention of chronic, lifestyle-related illnesses is a key factor in improving health and quality of life, and also in sustaining the social, economic and political development of our society. Increasingly, new technologies are reshaping the way we think, work and live, and in turn are changing our health needs and priorities. Today, non-communicable diseases cause almost three quarters of global deaths, and these figures are set to rise dramatically with the ageing population, increasing levels of physical inactivity and obesity, inadequate access to care, and growing environmental and political hazards. Meeting these changing health needs has become an issue of national priority and of considerable contemporary significance.

To this end, the Edith Cowan University Health and Wellness Institute was established at Edith Cowan University in 2003. Housed within the Faculty of Computing, Health and Science, the Institute represents a comprehensive, cross-disciplinary team of senior researchers from existing centres within the University, with well established national and international networks and recognised strengths in areas related to: public health, exercise science, nutrition, psychology, nursing and palliative care, neurosciences, genetics, Indigenous health, environmental management, human biology, management, and computer and information technology. Through its powerful team, the Institute provides a platform for developing leadership in teaching, learning, research and transfer of knowledge.
